What are idols?

In this context, idols are amateur artists who are primarily inspired by Japanese idol culture in music and performance style. Genres vary from bubblegum pop to heavy metal, but the thread of crowd interaction and love for this unique live culture bring us all together. The energy is high, the lights are bright, and the community is welcoming of all.

What is IDOL GATEWAY?

IDOL GATEWAY is a seasonal event hosted by local music artists whose goal is to hold live events inspired by Japanese idol culture such as 'taibans' (lit. translation "battle of the bands") showcasing many artists at one event with a dedicated merch and talk time after the performances. We want to be your gateway into learning more about idols!

Meet the IDOL GATEWAY Staff!

ADEN (right) is the creator and co-runner of IDOL GATEWAY, inspired by taiban style lives they frequented in Tokyo. They are in charge of the social media and performer relations. They are also staff for Tri-State Idol Union and Otakon Idolspace.

ALEX (middle) is a co-runner of IDOL GATEWAY, and has been a member of the kaigai idol community since its early days. They are in charge of branding and graphics. They are also staff for Tri-State Idol Union.

MICHAEL (left) is a co-runner of IDOL GATEWAY. In the community, as well as being a performer, he is aiming to make a space for everyone to be themselves. He is in charge of logistics and staffing. He is also staff for Otakon Idolspace.

Our Partners

We are partnered with Idol HOME, a resource and archival project supporting the idol community by disseminating news, compiling resources, providing assistance to and uplifting creators, and maintaining an archive of overseas idols.

We are also partnered with Tri-State Idol Union, a networking and resource community dedicated to advancing and connecting idol-inspired performers who are based in the North Eastern United States.

How Do I Perform at IDOL GATEWAY?

We are currently selecting performers via invitation per event! We use our knowledge of the idol community to reach out to those local to the DMV and even acts non-local to us!
However, we know our knowledge is limited. If you want to perform at one of our events, we have a Google Form to give us your information here!

I'm Not from the DMV, Can I Still Apply?

You are absolutely welcome to apply! While we primarily want to uplift idols local to our area, we are open to having one non-local act per event!
Further, we unfortunately cannot provide transportation or lodging for those coming from far distances.

I'm a Cosplay Idol, Can I Still Apply?

Unfortunately, our events are only open to original idol acts.

We're looking for volunteer staff members to help us run our taiban events!
